Founders

Romiley Lodge No. 4976 was founded in 1928 – principally, by members of
Doric Lodge No. 3384.

At the time, Freemasonry was greatly expanding. The new lodge was intended to meet the
needs of those living in the Romiley area.

Sponsoring Lodge

Doric Lodge No 3384 is regarded as being the “Mother Lodge”, being the sponsor in the application to UGLE
for a Warrant for a new Lodge. Doric Lodge had first met in Marple, at the (now demolished) Jolly Sailor Inn.
Doric now remains an active lodge.

Origins of Doric Lodge No.3384

Doric Lodge was founded in 1909, mainly by members of Lodge of Benevolence No. 336. This is a Lodge which can trace its origins back to 1759. It met then at the Sign of the Unicorn, Stockport (now the site of Robinson’s Brewery). It was established in Marple, and now meets at the Guildhall, Stockport.
