Every mason will have his personal reasons to become a member of the Craft.  These
could perhaps be:

1. “My father was a mason”
Sons often recognise the importance of Freemasonry in the life of a respected father.
Understandably, there may be a desire to follow a similar path.  A lodge will always acknowledge
this, by giving priority for membership to a Lewis – that is, the son of a mason.

2.  “My friends, and/or colleagues at work are masons”
Close associates will wish to share common experiences, which might include joining similar organisations.
Of course, this is acceptable to masonry.  Nevertheless, no one should ever expect membership of a lodge to
bring personal, or other financial gain through business connections.  Likewise within Freemasonry, there must never
be any discussion about religious or personal political preferences of members.

3.  “I like tradition and an important sense of values”
Freemasonry is an ancient and honourable institution.  For more than 300 years, masons have always been encouraged to live according to very high personal standards.  This includes the need to pay due obedience to the laws of the land and allegiance to one’s country.  Also, wherever possible too, to practice benevolence and charity.  Our ceremonies reflect the importance of all of these important values.

4. “To me, Charity is most important of all”
This is a sentiment expressed by many masons.  The pleasure is to see the money raised by each lodge and province being put to excellent use.  This is so in support of local good causes, as much as in making donations to masonic grand charities.

5. “The social life is important, both to me as a member and also where I can involve my wife”
Freemasonry provides an opportunity for men of all backgrounds, faiths, political beliefs and occupations to come together on the same level.  Each lodge will organise its own social programme.  This might include say, a simple lodge Christmas Social event (to include wives and non-masonic friends), or a light-hearted Olde English Night (to include visitors from other lodges), or a formal Ladies Night, where all can dress-up, enjoy a fine dinner, the opportunity for dancing and the pleasure of the good company of each other.
